The
floe edges is the place where open water joins land fast ice.
Some communities offer day trips by dog sled or boat, snowmobile
or qamutiik (sled) to the floe edge. You may be lucky enough
to witness a traditional seal hunt. Marine creatures such
as Narwhals, Thick-billed Murres, the snowy white Beluga Whales
and seals may be spotted on a floe edge tour. You may also
encounter polar bears near the floe edge. The best time to
visit a floe edge is between April and July.
Icebergs
are common near the floe edge. If travelling by boat, exercise
extreme caution around them as icebergs constantly shift and
break. When travelling with a guide, you may also get to enjoy
a floe edge traditional lunch of Arctic Char. Be sure to enjoy
tea made from the water of an iceberg and bannock, a traditional
staple of Inuit diet.
