Hunting and Fishing Adventures - Fishing |
|
Drop a line into an Arctic river, jig through the ice, troll on the crystalline blue-green waters of Hudson Bay or cast from the shore of a pebbly beach. Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling, whitefish and cod are available throughout the year, and Arctic Char runs in June.
Char fishing in the North is best done through frozen lakes in April or May, or along the coast in August. Fishing trips can take one or more days. While you fish, be prepared to glimpse wildlife and admire the profusion of blooming arctic flowers, or stop off to visit historical and archeological sites. Between October and November, make camp alongside native Inuit for the fall Arctic Char run.
Outfitters can take you on a package tour to the best fishing grounds in the North. In summer, you can travel by boat to hunt caribou, or fish for Lake Trout or Arctic Char. Many visitors also choose to explore by canoe. Small planes and helicopters are available for charter in summer and fall. Fishing licenses must be obtained from the local renewable resources officer.
Due to the slow rate of growth of arctic fish, catch-and-release fishing practices are encouraged for sport fishermen, although you are certainly allowed to keep and eat your catch, within limits.
