About Taloyoak
Alternate Name: Spence Bay
Local Meaning: Caribou Blind

Taloyoak is located at the head of Spence Bay on the southcoast of the Boothia Peninsula. Roald Amundsen explored much of the Boothia Peninsula on his journey through the Northwest Passage. The first inhabitants in this area were Netsilik Inuit. Taloyoak is home to many Inuit artisans. Inuit carvers work in bone, stone and ivory to create traditional and spiritual Inuit images. Traditional caribou and seal skin clothing, such as parkas, mitts and kamiks are also produced here.

The community's economy relies on trapping and the commercial Arctic Char fishery. Snowmobile tours of the region in winter and spring, and boating tours are available during the summer months. The famous "Spence Bay" packing dolls are produced here at Taluq Designs. They also offer other sewn crafts and garments such as plush polar bears, duffel slippers, duffel mitts and handmade Christmas ornaments.
