About Pond Inlet Alternate Name: Mittimatalik Local Meaning: Place of Mittima’s Grave |

Pond Inlet is located on scenic Eclipse Sound on northern Baffin Island. The beautiful scenary and abundant wildlife in the area have earned Pond Inlet that name, "jewel of the Baffin". This ancestral homeland of the North Baffin Inuit is rich in archaeology. Thule Inuit lived in the region for centuries and left many interesting sites. American and Scottish whalers frequently visited the area early in the 19th century. Today you can enjoy snowmobile tours, dog team tours, wildlife watching at the floe edge, sport fishing, hiking, walking, photography and sea kayaking in Pond Inlet.
Across the sound from Pond Inlet is the panoramic Bylot Island. Bylot Island has been a bird sanctuary for many years. It has recently become part of the Sirmilik National Park, one of three Canadian national parks created in 1999. The wetlands of Bylot Island are the nesting grounds for over 30 species of birds. The world's largest colony of greater snow geese is found at Bylot Island. Another interesting Bylot Island fact is that in 1987, the lower jaw of a duckbill dinosaur was found near the Bylot Island Bird Sanctuary.
Inuit guides escort adventurers on week-long expeditions to floe edges for wildlife watching, that includes catching glimpses of polar bears, walrus, narwhal, whales and bird colonies. Enjoy the outdoors, and then come in and let the staff of the Sauniq Hotel take care of you while you explore one of the most beautiful places in the Canadian Arctic. For the Curious in Pond Inlet
