About Kimmirut Alternate Name: Lake Harbour Local Meaning: Looks Like a Heel |
| Kimmirut is located on the south shore of the Meta Incognita Peninsula on Baffin Island. Whaling ships made annual calls at Kimmirut in the 19th century, making it the most important harbor on the south coast. At the start of World War I, Kimmirut was the center of a busy and thriving mica mining operation which employed Inuit and Scottish miners.
Kimmirut is an access point to the untouched splendor of Katannilik Park. The park is home to the tallest trees on Baffin Island. Dwarf Arctic Willow trees grow up to 10 feet high. Also unique to the park is one of the world's only deposits of lapis lazuli, a striking blue gemstone. Plan to arrive in Kimmirut at the time of the full moon or new moon to see the reversing falls where Soper Lake drains into the ocean.
The Soper River is a popular choice for expert canoeists. The lush Soper River valley passes through beautiful tundra of the Meta Incognita Peninsula to Kimmirut. This river offers up good whitewater experiences. Ocean-going wildlife watching tours can be arranged from Kimmirut as well as sea-kayaking adventures along the coast of Baffin Island.
There is an impressive arts community here. Inuit carvers work with the local apple-green soapstone to produce remarkable sculptures. Visitors to Kimmirut can arrange to tour a soapstone quarry. This area is also famous for its ivory carvers who produce intricate scrimshaw etchings.
