| Arviat is located on the western shores of the Hudson Bay. Arviat is known as the "Gateway to Nunavut". The community offers visitors the chance to explore many historic sites in and near the community. This area was first populated by the Paallirmiut Inuit who hunted seals, whales and walrus.Arviat is also known for its northern wildlife and a flourishing Inuit culture.
You'll discover Arviat's past and present at the Margaret Aniksak Visitors' Center. The centre houses displays of Inuit culture and wildlife interpretative displays. The Inuit carvers here use the hard grey rock from the shores of Hudson Bay. Traditional arts and crafts, such as shaman dolls and fabric have made the Arviatmiut famous. Inuit women fashion garments from caribou hides, seal skins, wolf, polar bear and fox skins to protect northern inhabitants from the winter cold.
Naturalist tours introduce visitors to the region's abundant flora and fauna of the tundra. Tours include snowmobile safaris, tundra adventures, floe edge tours and polar bear migration adventures. You can visit historic Inuit settlements and hunting camps on Hudson Bay's west coast. Summertime activities include photographic expeditions of wildlife, bird and waterfowl, wildflowers, and important archaeological sites. Travel the traditional routes of the Inuit people on Maguse Lake and see the undisturbed remains of the ancient Thule, ancestors of the Inuit.
